1st Impression : Double Dragon Neon (and more or less a review and a blog)

Back in the 80’s i remember i saw an arcade cabinet in a bar where two guys was playing, it was something new to me, of course i saw Gauntled cabinet and their 4 players control, but i never saw anyone play this one. Back to our two young fine gentlemen, they were playing a game with two guys punching and kicking goons, at this time the most famous beat em all was Renegade on amstrad CPC and their look inspired but the cult movie The Warriors instead of japenes furyos. This is how i discovered Double Dragon, the title itself reminds me a lot of good memories on my good old Sega Master System. Then we cant say we had a lot of good sequel, the 2nd was pretty good and original with their left and right attacks, but the third was definetly too hard and lame, i wont mention the VS adapted from the Double Dragon Tv show, but i remember the good one on Neo Geo based on the awful movie and of course Rage of the Dragons, wich impressed me more than those remake on GBA.

To me, Double Dragon is the top notch side scroller beat em up game and : multiple combos, attacks and special moves. Since of course we had the impressive Final Fight, even if it was simple to use and even if i love Streets of Rage (Bare Knuckles), i have to say no game had the Double Dragon depth, i had to wait untill one of my favorite Ubisoft game Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, and its gameplay inspired by River City Ransom (made by the creator of Double Dragon and Renegade : the kunui kun saga). Then since 2012 we had more beat’em up on pc, the good Fist Punchers and the excellent Foul Play.

Last year i was a bit sad to see there were a Double Dragon on xbox live arcade and psn, but i got my hand on the OST… and it was absolutly great, Jake Kauffman is an excellent composer (he made the ost of Bloodrayne Betrayal and Shovel Knight), i got to listen to 4 first tracks on repeat as they were so good.

Now the game is available on steam, i was finally able to play it, the game is good, not great, but really good if you love beat’em up : punches, kicks, grab, jump, a special move button, one for running and finally one to crouch. The combo list is really impressive, but what i noticed, is certainly the legacy of River City Ranson, no free roaming, but you can level up and use different special moves : fireball, the famous whirlwind kick or summon lightning. Usually in beat em all you got one or two buttons to mix and match your attacks, but at last we got back to the root of the beat em up.

The character doesnt taste like a post apocalyptic setting, like in the original Double Dragon (or Road Avenger the spinoff), the baddies and our twins looks more like from Final Fight, and certainly the game was also influenced by capcom, as our twins has to break trash bin to get foods (yeah back in the early 90s we were scavanging trash to find foods).

My first solo impression are pretty good, i m really looking forward to play a coop mode, but i would more advice the ost, it s free on bandcamp and jake kauffman is a really good composer (check also his other works).

so the first four hoards were so popular that theyve become kind of on ongoing series ! some of the ones here feature the commissioners ocs and personal items, but ALL of them involve things very dear to me: weird lizards on piles of junk

oh wow the lego one looks really time consuming to draw!

The snake hoard dragon is so accurate to what I’d want to be as a dragon, too.

In some countries, they call him “Wally”, but in others, they have a different name…

Quickie Review : Vanguard Princess

Japan didn’t wait for Braid to have an indie and anamateur game making comunity, the doujinshi games is something you could do and it s easy to sell their productions during convention, to tell you a story about me, i bought a game durng a french convention from the editor of Melty Blood (an EXCELLENT game). Online platform offered to this amateurs and indies to distribuate their game more easyli. Vanguard Princess is a kind i would love to play 10 years ago. Why ? Because it s made on Fighter Maker, and this program doesnt like modern gamepad, and also Fighter Maker has some issues to give an enjoyable experience. Vanguard Princess is also a niche game, the moe genre, let s say it s not a sexy genre it s more kawaii with early teen girls, and in some respect, nothing is really inspired in the fighter design.

5 out 10, it s average. If you want a better moe genre fighting game, you got Arcana Hearts 3 on Ps3, it s also a doujinshi game, it has a better gameplay, it has also a bigger roster. If you really want a good 2d fighting game, Blazblue hase been released on Steam. You cans safely skip Vanguard Princess.

Ps : yes i didn’t describe the game mecanism, but it s too classic, even with an assist mode.

Quickie Review : One Finger Death Punch

One Finger Death Punch is really simple game, simple enough to be the kind of game you could play 5 minutes on your smartphone or tablet, but i played on PC, is it any good ? First of all, One Finger Death would be the strange mix between a beat em up and a rythmic game (almost like Beat Fighting) with really simple graphics just like Dick Figures, Cartoon Wars or Fancy Pants. At frst glance you ll ask me how it s a rythm game ? Let me explain, during your fights, you have to face one side and an other when you re attacked, press the button too early or too late you ll get a hit, and you ll realize really soon that even if there is no music, it literally the concept of a rythm game.

I like OFDP but it s not the kind of game designed for pc, even if playing with the mouse, the keyboard or gamepad is a good experience, as i said it s the kind of game you play 5 minutes when you re in public transport or sit on your toilets. 5 out of 10, it s a fun game but pc is not the right port.

Quickie Review : Gigantic Army

Last month i talked about BAD Battle Armor Division, and how it tasted like some old mechas shooter games on snes ? Well guess what ? MECHAS ARE BACK ! Thanks to Titanfall, Hawken and Mechwarrior Online ? Gigantic Army is more arcade than BAD, you pilot a mecha, you choose weapons like any manic shooter (3 primary shot and 3 smart bombs), you fight your way through waves of ennemies collecting power ups, you face a mid level boss and a boss, just to get the best score at the end of the level. Gigantic Army is simple as this. The game itself is pretty nice to play, and really feel like those old 16 bit sidescroller mecha shooter.

7 out of 10, Gigantic Army is interesting if you enjoy the neo retro pixel art and if you re a mecha nostalgic.

Thief fails ?

no dont worry i m not saying the game is a failure… i just need to fix it, apparently it doesnt start, even i made some maintenance, wich mean :i have to download it completly once again.

love how Shane O Mac keeps his beer in his mouth to let Steve use his stunner on him.

Love also also how shane do the coast to coast, and the rocky johnson silly dance.

I present the most badass gifset on Tumblr.

Legitimately turned on by this

This is the best thing.

Oh my god

I don’t even know this fandom and this is cool.

Reason #999 why the cartoon will always be ONE MILLION PERCENT better than that travesty of a movie. They did so much research and put so much detail in you don’t even notice.

Bonus trivia: Toph got a unique martial arts style to match her distinct version of Earthbending (Southern Praying Mantis style, I think) which the creators found out later was (according to legend) invented by a blind woman. Totally a coincidence, but still so *** cool.

(If you don’t watch the show, Toph is both blind from birth and the best *** Earthbender in the world. Also, GO WATCH THE SHOW.)

i havent learned them all, but i recognize all their still, and especially the Tai Qi. I love the show because of that, the chinese martial arts along an interesting story about balance.
